Argleton appears on many maps as a town near to Ormskirk in South Lancashire, yet Argleton does not exist and its presumed location is merely a field.

The origin of this celebrated 'phantom town' is unclear - it may be an accidental mis-spelling and misloaction of nearby Aughton, it may be a 'copyright spoiler', a deliberately false entry placed by a past cartographer so as to check for unauthorised copies of their work, and then reproduced by others.

It has, however, given rise to Argleton Pie, offered in a nearby pub as a food 'with no ingredients', the culinary equivalent of American experimental composer John Cage's completely silent "Four minutes, thirty-three seconds".
