A version of English Ale developed for the Russian market. English beers were traded to Russia in huge quantities from the end of the eighteenth century until punitive tariffs and Napoleon's blockade led to the state-sponsored establishment of a brewery in St Petersburg.



The present-day 'Baltika' brewery is the largest in Russia, and one of the largest in the world, and continues to produce a variety of English-style beers. In the Russian tradition, Baltika beers are still identified simply by number, progressing in strength and darkness from the non-alcoholic '0', through the pale '1', the '7' stout, to the super-strength black '8'.
