The use of the term 'growler' is known anecdotally from South Yorkshire for pork pies and from about 2004 onwards in Cumbria for dry beef pies. The origin is not known, it may be connected with the USA term 'growler' for a lidded bucket, later transferred to a beer jug. 'Growler' is also used for a small iceberg and a type of sturdy horse carriage.
