The original Bisto, developed by in 1908 by Mr Roberts and Mr Patterson of the Cerebos salt company, and still available, was not an instant gravy mix but a neutrally-flavoured powder mix of starch, colouring and seasonings used to "Brown, season and thicken" (hence the name) flavoursome meat juices to improve a traditional-style gravy.

In 1919, The ragamuffin 'Bisto Kids', Created by cartoonist Wilf Owen, were introduced to advertising with their 'Aah Bisto' catchphrase.

In 1979 the brand, now part of Premier Foods, was extended to include a range of granular complete gravy mixes which now accounts for some 70% of the UK market.
