Black Worcester Pear
Large round pear of dark red-purple colour. Sharp, bitter and inedible until cooked. Known to have grown in Worcester before 1575 when Queen Elizabeth I admired them at Whystone Farm. It appears on the coat of arms of the city of Worcester. See: Wardens
