Blackberry and Apple Pie

Filling of apple slices and whole blackberries.

Although this is now one of the most popular of sweet pies, we can find no written record of it before a sudden burst of newspaper reports at the beginning of the 20th Century. Early receipts all reserve the blackberry for either jam or wine.

North Devon Journal - Thursday 03 September 1903; "SOUTHMOLTON GOSSIP. "Southmolton is a truly a place for talking. The time has arrived for blackberry and apple pie, but, alas, the former are either red or green, and, alas for the latter, they are conspicuous by their absence, and orchards which once bore a wealth of the golden fruit offer now no attractions for the orchard breaker. Even young Mr. Jack, who is supposed very shortly to extract the proverbial plum, is likely to be out of work."
