Charles Harper's 'The Portsmouth Road' of 1895 suggests that the form appeared following the marriage in 1816 of the Prince Regent's only daughter, Charlotte, to Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, the German Duchy. A similar bread style is known in Germany, but is not normally made using white wheatflour.
