Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), leader of the drive to unite Italy and a ceaseless fighter against dictatorship, was immensely admired in England. The biscuits in his honour were first made by Peek Frean & Co of Bermondsey in 1861, and when he visited London in 1864 it is said that the whole country shut down for 3 days. He also has a French demi-glâce sauce and a consomme named after him.
