A dish of oat flakes or oatmeal (or very occasionally other meal) boiled in water or milk and served for breakfast, commonly topped with milk or cream and a sweetener such as honey, sugar or golden syrup. Before the 19th century porridge was a term for a thick soup made by stewing vegetables, herbs, or meat, often thickened with barley, pulses, etc.
