The origin of the epithet 'pie-eater' for an inhabitant of the Lancashire town of Wigan, though often cited as ancient, only seems to go back to the 1980's.
While the 'slappy' is regularly available (2014) from Wigan chip shops, the alternative 'national dish', the 'Wigan Kebab' consisting of a selection of pies on a snooker cue does not seem to possess any reality beyond stage comedians, though that hasn't stopped the Wigan Warriors rugby club from offering this patriotic car sticker...
