The first 'Bramley's Seedling' grew from pips planted by the young Mary Ann Brailsford in her garden in Southwell, Nottinghamshire around1809. The cottage and garden were purchased by a butcher, Matthew Bramley in 1846, who later supplied cutting to Henry Merryweather, a nurseryman.
