Horseradish Ale

A form of ale, or other drink, made with horseradish as a presumed cure for stones. Known only from literary references, the receipt may be lost.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys for Friday 16 September 1664 has; "walked to the mathematical instrument maker in Moorefields and bought a large pair of compasses, and there met Mr. Pargiter, and he would needs have me drink a cup of horse-radish ale, which he and a friend of his troubled with the stone have been drinking of"

'The Trial of Sir John Falstaff' by AMF Randolph (c1881) has; "A pot of small beer, sir, or for God's sake, a cup or horse-radish ale, which I drink at home whenever I can get it, for I'm troubled with the gravel."
