The chewable raw, dried, rhizome (known as Liquorice-Root, Liquorice Wood or Stickali) of the plant Glycyrrhiza glabra, usually about 1/4ins diameter, 6 ins log, or a preparation made from it and sold in black cylindrical sticks. Liquorice was formerly grown in England in significant quantity, notably around Pontefract.
