During WWII children were paid 3d per lb to collect rose hips as a source of much-needed vitamin C. The officially approved receipt for syrup allowed 2 lbs of minced hips boiled with 3 pints of water, very thoroughly strained, then boiled down to 1½ pints with 1¼ lbs of sugar. Care has to be taken to remove the irritating little hairs from rose hips - they are the source of commercial joke itching powder.
